Biden Directs Pentagon to Continue Increasing Military Aid to Ukraine
US President Joe Biden has announced that he has instructed the Pentagon to continue ramping up military support for Ukraine. In a statement released on Wednesday, Biden said, “In recent months, the United States has provided Ukraine with hundreds of intercept missiles, with more on the way.”
He continued, “The US Department of Defense has been directed to increase arms shipments to Ukraine, and the United States will continue to work on strengthening Ukraine’s position as it defends itself against Russian forces.”
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had previously announced on December 2 that Ukraine would receive aid including hundreds of thousands of artillery shells and thousands of rockets by mid-January 2025. He also noted plans for additional interceptor missiles.
Under Biden’s administration, the United States has committed over $63.5 billion in military aid
to Ukraine, including $62.9 billion since the onset of Russia’s military operation.
This escalation in support underscores the U.S.’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense
capabilities amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. The aid includes not only munitions but also
aims at enhancing Ukraine’s strategic position in the region.
The actions taken by Biden reflect a broader strategy to support allies in defending their
sovereignty, ensuring that Ukraine has the necessary resources to continue its defense efforts
effectively.
