Drone Attack Targets American Base “Kharab Al-Jir” in Eastern Syria
A suicide drone attacked one of the U.S. military bases in eastern Syria, marking the first assault on these bases since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government and the second within this month.
According to sources speaking to Sputnik’s correspondent in Syria, the American base in the
village of Kharab Al-Jir, near the oil-rich town of Rmelan in the northeastern province of Al-
Hasakah, was targeted early Thursday, December 26. This was the first incident of its kind since
Assad’s government was overthrown.
The sources further stated that the sounds of explosions from the base’s air defenses attempting
to intercept the drone were heard throughout the area, with unconfirmed reports suggesting the
drone was shot down before reaching the base.
These sources also clarified that the drone approached from the eastern side, close to the Syrian-Iraqi border adjacent to the base.
In response, U.S. forces have escalated their alert status at Kharab Al-Jir and other bases in the
rural areas of Al-Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor to the highest level, preparing for potential similar
attacks.
The last attack on American bases occurred on December 4, while there has been a significant
increase in reinforcements arriving at these bases by air and land, with intensified ground patrols
over the past few days.
The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) has acknowledged that the number of American
troops in Syria has now reached 2,000, up from the previous count of 900.
