Chinese Centenarian Reveals Secret to Long Life
In January 2025, Chinese centenarian Xiu Caishi celebrated her 124th birthday, revealing that the secret to her long life lies in early sleep, eating three meals a day, and maintaining an optimistic outlook.
Born in 1901 during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Xiu now resides in the city of Nanchong in Sichuan Province, southwest China. On January 1, 2025, she turned 124 years old.
According to a report by the South China Morning Post, her birthdate is officially recorded in one of China’s civil offices, although her age has not been internationally verified by global organizations.
The newspaper detailed that Xiu maintains a routine of eating three meals daily, taking a walk post-meal, and retiring to bed by 8 PM. Despite her age, she continues to perform tasks like combing her hair, lighting a fire, feeding ducks, and even climbing stairs with ease.
Her favorite dish is a porridge made from pumpkin, winter melon, and ground corn, seasoned with a spoonful of pork lard.
Xiu gained respect from her village even before her marriage due to her exceptional accounting skills and remarkable physical strength. She managed the toughest farming tasks and stone masonry. By the time she reached 40, her husband passed away suddenly, leaving her to raise four children alone. Despite financial hardships, she tirelessly worked to provide new clothes and food for her children.
After turning 100
Her vision and hearing began to weaken, but she has retained her intelligence and eloquence. Her granddaughter noted, “After every hardship, my grandmother stays silent for a while, then she returns to laughter and optimism.” Xiu currently lives with her granddaughter in a three-story rural house in Nanchong.
The South China Morning Post also cited the 2020 Chinese census data, stating that China has 119,000 citizens over 100 years old, marking the highest such count in the world.
This story of Xiu Caishi not only highlights the personal journey of an extraordinary individual but also sheds light on the cultural and lifestyle factors contributing to longevity in China.
