Pedersen in Damascus to Push Comprehensive Political Process in Syria
In a significant development for Syrian politics, Geir Pedersen, the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, has made his second visit to Damascus since the fall of the Syrian regime on December 8th of the previous year. He met with Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the head of the interim Syrian administration, focusing on advancing a comprehensive political process in the country.
During Pedersen’s visit to the Syrian capital in mid-December, discussions revolved around the current political landscape, the challenges faced by Syrians, and economic and developmental issues. The talks highlighted the need to revisit UN Resolution 2254 due to the recent changes in the political scenario, suggesting that updates are necessary to align with current developments.
Before his first visit, UN Secretary-General’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, confirmed that Pedersen’s office had engaged with representatives of the armed opposition now controlling Damascus. This engagement underscores the UN’s intent to include all stakeholders in the peace process.
Today’s meeting between Al-Sharaa and Pedersen was also attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani. Pedersen’s aim is to facilitate the comprehensive political process promised by the new Syrian administration, emphasizing a collaborative effort to stabilize and rebuild the nation.
This diplomatic endeavor signals a hopeful step towards peace and governance reform in Syria, with Pedersen’s role being crucial in mediating between various factions and ensuring that the political dialogue includes all segments of Syrian society.
