TikTok’s Continued Absence from Apple and Google App Stores in the US
Despite President Donald Trump signing an executive order to delay the enforcement of a ban on TikTok by 75 days, the app remains unavailable on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the United States as of Tuesday. This move comes amidst growing uncertainties regarding the future of the Chinese-owned short-video app, which went dark on Saturday just before a law mandating its sale by ByteDance or facing a nationwide ban took effect, due to national security concerns.
While TikTok has resumed its services following assurances from Trump that there would be no hefty fines for the company and its partners to keep the app running, it has yet to return to the app stores. Analysts speculate that the delay might be due to Apple and Google waiting for further legal protections before circumventing the ban, which penalizes companies for hosting or distributing the app.
Apple’s App Store states, “TikTok and other ByteDance apps are not available in the country or region you’re in,” while Google Play notes, “Downloads for this app are paused due to current US legal requirements.”
