Saudi Arabia Engages with Europe and US to Lift Sanctions on Syria
On Friday, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan announced that the Kingdom is in talks with Europe and America to remove sanctions imposed on Syria. Speaking from Damascus during a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart, Asaad al-Shibani, Prince Faisal stated, “Riyadh is engaged in discussions to lift the sanctions on Syria and we are receiving positive signals regarding this matter.”
Prince Faisal emphasized Saudi Arabia’s support for Syrian sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity, highlighting that Syrian unity would enable the country to regain its significant regional status. He further added that they would work alongside the Syrian people to establish mechanisms for supporting and uplifting Syria, commending steps taken by the Syrian administration towards dialogue and inclusivity.
Upon his arrival in Damascus on Friday, Prince Faisal met with Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the new Syrian administration, who is keen on opening a new chapter in relations with Saudi Arabia, according to a Syrian official source on Telegram.
Ahmed al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani welcomed Prince Faisal and his high-level delegation.
This visit marks the first time a Saudi Foreign Minister has visited Syria since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024, and the subsequent rise of opposition factions to governance.
The new Syrian authorities have expressed a desire for a fresh start in relations with Saudi Arabia, following Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani’s visit to Saudi Arabia at the beginning of January, marking his first international trip since taking office.
This diplomatic engagement signals a potential shift in regional politics, aiming to foster reconstruction and normalization in Syria after years of conflict and isolation.
By actively engaging in these discussions, Saudi Arabia is not only looking to aid Syria’s economic recovery but also to strengthen its influence in the Middle Eastern geopolitical landscape. The outcomes of these talks could pave the way for broader international support and investment in Syria, crucial for its rebuilding efforts. However, the journey towards lifting sanctions and
achieving stability in Syria remains complex, with multiple international and regional players
involved.
