Zelensky’s Conditions for Meeting Putin
On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the only Russian official he is prepared to speak with is President Vladimir Putin, but this will only happen after Ukraine agrees on a joint plan with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky revealed that Trump had given him his personal phone number, assuring him that he could call at any time.
Zelensky, speaking in English, said, “I will meet with one Russian official, that is Putin, (and that will happen) only after we reach a joint plan with Trump and Europe. We will sit with Putin and stop the war. Only in this case, I am ready to meet.”
He reiterated in English at the Munich Security Conference, “I will meet the Russians – one Russian man only, that’s Putin – only after we reach a joint plan with Trump and Europe,” adding, “We will sit with Putin and stop the war, I am ready to meet in this case only.”
Before this statement, Zelensky had affirmed his readiness on Friday to hold direct talks with Russia as soon as Kyiv reaches a common stance with the United States and Europe on how to end the three-year ongoing war.
In this context, he stated, “We are ready for any talks with the Americans and our allies. If they provide us with specific responses to certain demands and a common understanding about (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s dangerous actions, then… we will be ready to talk with the Russians.”
