Kremlin Announces Lavrov and Ushakov to Meet with US Officials in Saudi Arabia
The Kremlin announced on Monday that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, alongside Yuri Ushakov, Foreign Policy Advisor to President Vladimir Putin, will partake in discussions with U.S. officials in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. The focus will be on U.S.-Russian relations.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesperson, informed journalists that the meeting would also prepare the groundwork for possible peace talks regarding Ukraine.
Lavrov and Ushakov are set to depart for Riyadh today, Monday.
However, Peskov refrained from commenting when asked if President Putin would meet President Donald Trump face-to-face in Saudi Arabia later this month.
Peskov also mentioned that the Russian delegation is ready to discuss the Middle East situation during tomorrow’s negotiations if the topic arises. He stated, “If this issue is touched upon in one way or another, our representatives will be ready to discuss this topic as well.”
A U.S. delegation, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, arrived in Riyadh today.
According to media reports, the scheduled talks between U.S. and Russian officials aim to end Moscow’s ongoing nearly three-year war in Ukraine. Trump has directed senior officials to begin negotiations on the conflict, which he repeatedly promised to end during his election campaign.
American media have reported that U.S. and Russian officials will meet in Saudi Arabia to prepare for a possible summit between Presidents Putin and Trump later this month, though no specific date for this anticipated meeting has been set.
In this context, President Trump stated that his administration is working diligently to make progress on the Ukraine war file, confirming that the Ukrainian President will have a role in the anticipated talks in Saudi Arabia.
