Trump Lays Off More US Government Employees
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump announced that it has placed nearly all employees
of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) worldwide, except for a small number, on
paid administrative leave. Additionally, it plans to eliminate approximately 2,000 of these jobs in the
United States, according to a notice sent to agency employees and reviewed by Reuters.
Starting directly at midnight on Sunday, Eastern U.S. time, all USAID employees hired directly by the
agency—except those deemed essential for critical functions—will be placed on leave.
At the same time, the agency has begun “implementing a reduction in force,” affecting around 2,000 of
its U.S.-based employees, as stated in the notice.
The White House has not yet responded to a request for comment.
Efforts to dismantle USAID, the primary mechanism for delivering U.S. foreign aid and a key tool of
American “soft power” to gain influence abroad, are being led by the Department of Government
Efficiency, headed by billionaire Elon Musk.
On January 20, the day he returned to the White House, Trump signed an executive order freezing U.S.
foreign aid for 90 days pending a comprehensive review.
