Jordan Hosts Meeting of Syria’s Neighboring Countries to Discuss Regional Stability
On Sunday, Jordan hosted a meeting of Syria’s neighboring countries, including Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon, to address pressing regional concerns.
The meeting brought together foreign ministers, defense ministers, army chiefs, and intelligence directors. Discussions focused on security, counterterrorism, and fostering stability across the region.
Key Statements from the Meeting
At the conclusion of the gathering, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi emphasized the interconnectedness of regional stability, stating, “Syria’s security and stability are inseparable from the region’s overall stability.” During a joint press conference, he added, “This meeting reaffirmed our unified stance on combating terrorism and countering ISIS. We support Syria in achieving its security and stability.”
Safadi also pointed to external challenges, noting, “Israel is attempting to create chaos and pretexts to achieve its goals in the region.”
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stressed the importance of dialogue, saying, “It’s crucial to open a Syrian dialogue that includes all components of the population to achieve stability.” He further noted, “Fighting ISIS requires regional and international support, and Iraq’s stability stems from Syria’s stability.”
Turkey and Syria Weigh In
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan condemned Israel’s expansionist policies in Syria, stating, “We support all steps to preserve the lives of all Syrians. All components of the Syrian population must remain far from fueling tensions.” Fidan also highlighted ongoing efforts against terrorism, adding, “We continue to combat ISIS, and this meeting established a plan that includes a joint operations room to confront terrorism.”
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani affirmed his country’s commitment to cooperation, saying, “We are ready to continue joint efforts for a better future for the region.” He emphasized inclusivity, adding, “We protect all components of the Syrian population without discrimination and will not allow a repeat of the Syrian people’s tragedies.”
Al-Shaibani also underscored the role of the new Syrian government, stating, “The new Syrian government is the guarantor of civil peace. We will not allow any entity to take the state’s role, and those involved in violations will face justice.”
