Massive Gas Discovery Signals Bright Future for Arab Nation
A groundbreaking gas discovery in an Arab country has sparked optimism, revealing untapped potential in a region long defined by its geological riches. This find, marked by vast limestone deposits and dune sands, could reshape the nation’s energy landscape and bolster its economic prospects.
Unveiling a Hidden Treasure in Morocco
According to the “Energy” platform, a significant gas discovery was confirmed in Morocco on Thursday. The breakthrough came after the British company Predator Oil & Gas successfully drilled the “MOU-5” well in the Guercif region. Unexpectedly, the operation uncovered substantial resources, including helium deposits and unique geological formations. For Morocco, this marks a pivotal moment, as the discovery hints at a promising reserve of both oil and gas waiting to be fully explored.
Geological Insights Boost Potential
Predator Oil & Gas, holding a 75% stake in the Guercif license, reported large quantities of limestone
and dune sands, enhancing the site’s hydrocarbon potential. Meanwhile, Morocco’s National Office of
Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) retains the remaining 25% share. The “MOU-5” well reached its
primary target, the Domirian carbonate formation, located at a significant depth due to mobile salt
layers. Consequently, this increases the thickness of the impermeable layer essential for trapping oil and
gas, raising hopes for a substantial reserve.
A New Layer of Opportunity
Beyond the carbonate formation, the drilling revealed a 30-meter-thick layer of high-quality sand, a
feature previously unseen in the region. This unexpected find adds another dimension to the discovery’s
value. However, operations have been paused to allow for further seismic data analysis and technical
evaluations. These steps are crucial to understanding the full scope of the reserve and planning the next
phase of exploration.
In conclusion, the Guercif discovery, spanning 4,301 square kilometers across four exploration permits,
positions Morocco as an emerging player in the energy sector. With the license extended until
November 5, 2026, this find promises long-term benefits.
