Clash on Jordan-Syria Border Results in Officer Injury, Drug Smuggler Killed
A drug smuggler was killed in a clash on the Jordanian-Syrian border involving the Jordanian
Border Guard and a group of drug smugglers attempting to infiltrate the Kingdom, according to a
statement from the Jordanian Army on Sunday.
Jordan shares a 375-kilometer desert border with Syria, where the Jordanian military has
previously thwarted, detained, and killed dozens of smugglers during Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
A senior military source from the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces stated that
“Border Guard forces engaged with armed groups of smugglers early Sunday morning, who
attempted to cross the Kingdom’s northern border with Syria.”
The source reported “the injury of a Jordanian Border Guard officer and the death of one
smuggler, with the rest retreating into Syrian territory.”
The injured officer was airlifted to a medical facility and is reported to be in stable condition.
Significant amounts of narcotics were seized along with two automatic Kalashnikov rifles and a
pistol, with the confiscated materials handed over to the relevant authorities.
The source emphasized that “the Jordanian Armed Forces continue to utilize their capabilities to
prevent infiltration and smuggling, maintaining the security and stability of the Hashemite
Kingdom of Jordan.”
Jordan has been combating smuggling operations, particularly of weapons and drugs like
Captagon, for years, especially since the bloody conflict in Syria that began in 2011, which
resulted in over half a million deaths and ended with the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December.
Jordan, hosting around 1.6 million Syrian refugees, describes these smuggling operations as
“organized,” sometimes involving drones and protected by armed groups, which has prompted
the use of air forces on multiple occasions.
