LONDON/SINGAPORE  – The Japanese yen drifted to its softest level in four weeks against the dollar on Wednesday on the back of rising U.S. yields, as placid markets encouraged investors to resume carry trades, while the euro weakened after German inflation data.

Japan is concerned about negative effects of the weak yen, finance minister Shunichi Suzuki said on Friday, in a fresh warning to speculators as the currency fell further after the central bank’s widely expected decision to hold rates steady.

LONDON – Global shares rose on Tuesday, driven by a recovery on Wall Street, where investor focus is pinned on earnings reports from the U.S. megacaps, while the yen hit a new 34-year low against the dollar, prompting a warning from Japanese officials.

TOKYO – The dollar consolidated on Wednesday ahead of a key inflation report later in the day, while the yen remained a whisker away from what markets believe to be the line in the sand for Japanese authorities to intervene.

The yen hit a 34-year low against the dollar on Wednesday, just over a week after the Bank of Japan announced a much-anticipated interest rate hike in a shift away from years of ultra-loose monetary policy.

The Japanese yen tumbled on Tuesday after the central bank made the momentous, but widely anticipated, decision to end its negative interest rate policy, while the dollar rose ahead of the upcoming Federal Reserve decision on rates.
