An official in the Axis of Resistance tells Al Mayadeen that Iranian military advisors in Syria are present legally and in agreement with the Syrian authorities.
The news circulated by international media and Arab websites about Iranians evacuating southern Syria and reducing their numbers is not true, an official in the Axis of Resistance told Al Mayadeen on Wednesday.
The official affirmed that there are no Iranian forces in Syria, but rather military advisors who are present legally and in agreement with the Syrian authorities.
According to the official, the Iranian military advisors continue to fulfill their duties in Syria in accordance with an agreement with Damascus.
This is not the first time rumors have circulated about a reduction in Iranian presence in Syria.
Informed sources told Al Mayadeen in early February that reports of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) downsizing its advisory presence in Syria were false.
The sources confirmed that Iranian advisors had been instructed to remain in Syria without their families.
The rumors coincide with repeated attacks targeting Iranian military advisors in Syria. the recent of which was the Israeli aggression that targeted the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus on April 1, resulting in the martyrdom of seven IRGC advisors.
Following the Israeli aggression, Iran practiced its legal right and launched a retaliatory attack with tens of missiles and drones against Israeli targets in occupied territories.
Iranian officials affirmed that Iran’s Operation True Promise came within the framework of self-defense and as permitted by international law, and only targeted military sites to avoid civilian targets, in contrast to the Israeli aggression that targeted the Iranian consulate in Syria.
