The president of the Supreme Political Council in Yemen, Mahdi al-Mashat, appointed on Saturday Ahmad Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi to form the new government in Sanaa.
This comes based on the directives of the leader of the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement, Sayyed Abdul Malik al-Houthi, who called late last year for radical changes in state institutions.
In September 2023, the National Defense Council in the Yemeni government of Sanaa ended the mission of the government headed by Abdulaziz bin Habtoor, in response to Sayyed al-Houthi’s calls for radical changes, assigning it to conduct regular public affairs except for appointment and dismissal.
Al-Rahawi, the newly-appointed premier, has been a member of the Supreme Political Council in Yemen since March 2019.
He hails from Abyan Governorate in southern Yemen and is a member of the Central Committee of the General People’s Congress party.
Previously, al-Rahawi served as the Governor of Abyan in the Sanaa government, as well as a Deputy Governor since 2009.
He also held the position of Director General and Chairman of the Local Council in the Khanfar District, the largest district in Abyan Governorate on the Arabian Sea.
Additionally, al-Mashat issued on Saturday a decree appointing Bin Habtoor as a member of the Supreme Political Council.
A source told Al Mayadeen that the fundamental change will occur in stages and will encompass government structures, ministries, and institutions.
According to the source, the change will include the government first, followed by the judiciary, and will extend to other bodies.
The source stressed that the Yemeni people are called upon to cooperate, create awareness, and confront all conspiracies in the process.
