U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has reiterated President Joe Biden’s stance that the death of Hamas political leader Yahya Sinwar should serve as a turning point in efforts to end the ongoing conflict. Harris emphasized that everyone should seize this moment to push for an end to the war in Gaza and across the region.
As Harris prepares for the upcoming U.S. presidential election, where she will face off against former President Donald Trump, she pledged to continue working toward a ceasefire between Gaza and Israel, as well as between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Harris stressed her belief that diplomacy remains the key to achieving stability along the Israel-Lebanon border.
“This year has been extremely difficult due to the scale of death, destruction in Gaza, civilian losses, and displacement in Lebanon,” Harris remarked. “The death of Sinwar must be a turning point, and everyone should take advantage of it to bring an end to the war.”
Biden and Kirby’s Similar Views
Harris’ remarks align closely with those made by President Joe Biden, who stated on Thursday that Sinwar’s death “presents an opportunity to launch a peace process in the Middle East.”
Additionally, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby echoed these sentiments, stating that Sinwar’s death marks a significant moment that could help end the war. Kirby noted that while Hamas is weakened militarily, it remains a lethal force in Gaza.
“Hamas’ military infrastructure has been severely damaged, but the group still retains some capabilities in Gaza,” Kirby added.
