Israel Operation in Syria: Insight into Shaldag Unit’s Mission
On Thursday evening, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) disclosed the specifics of a large-scale operation conducted in Syria. This operation involved more than 100 fighters from the elite Shaldag Unit, targeting an underground missile production facility.
IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee announced on his “X” account:
“More than 100 fighters from the special Shaldag Unit raided and destroyed an underground site for precision missile production in deep Syrian territory four months ago.”
The operation:
Which took place on September 8, 2024, was described as a special air force operation aimed at demolishing a complex in the Masyaf area. Adraee elaborated that the mission was part of extensive intelligence-gathering efforts over years, which pinpointed the nature of the target, leading to a comprehensive plan for its destruction by air force units.
The tactical approach involved military helicopters landing under the cover of aerial support, including drones and fighter jets, alongside naval ships providing additional assistance.
Adraee emphasized that the site was an Iranian-backed and funded project, aimed at equipping
Iran’s proxies, particularly Hezbollah, near Israel’s northern borders with advanced weaponry.
The compound included advanced production lines specifically designed for manufacturing
precision missiles and long-range rocket shells to enhance the supply to Hezbollah and other
Iranian agents in the region.
During the operation:
The forces managed to secure critical production equipment like a planetary mixer, along with
various combat tools and intelligence documents, all of which were taken back for further study.
After securing these assets, the site was destroyed, and the forces safely returned to Israeli
territory. Adraee concluded by affirming that the IDF would continue to employ diverse,
innovative, and professional methods to neutralize threats against Israeli citizens.
This operation underscores Israel’s ongoing efforts to counteract the proliferation of advanced
weaponry in the region, particularly those supported by external powers like Iran, amidst the
complex geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
