Yoav Gallant Reviews His Military and Political Service After Resigning from the Israeli Knesset
On Wednesday, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced his resignation from the Knesset while affirming his continued membership in Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party.
In a statement broadcast by Israeli television channels, Gallant reviewed his years of military and political service, emphasizing his role in weakening the military capabilities of Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. He also took responsibility for the period leading up to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, and the ongoing war, as noted by “The Times of Israel.”
Gallant reiterated his belief in the path and values of his party but criticized some recent government policies, notably describing judicial reforms as “an immediate and clear danger.” He stressed the necessity of full and equal conscription for all Israelis, considering the enlistment of the Haredim a “military necessity.”
Gallant linked his dismissal from the position of Defense Minister in November to his stance on
the issue of military conscription. He pointed out that his successor, Israel Katz, along with
Netanyahu, are working towards exempting Haredim from military service, a policy he stated he
could not be complicit in.
This resignation marks a significant moment in Israeli politics, highlighting internal tensions
within the Likud Party and the broader political landscape regarding military service obligations
and judicial reforms. Gallant’s departure from the Knesset but not from the party suggests a
nuanced critique from within, possibly signaling more shifts in Israeli political alignments in the
near future.
