Trump’s Allies in Congress Push for Greenland Purchase
In a surprising political maneuver, allies of President-elect Donald Trump in the U.S. House of Representatives are rallying support for a bill that would authorize negotiations for the purchase of Greenland from Denmark. A document reviewed by Reuters on Monday reveals this concerted effort by Republican representatives.
According to the offices of Republican Congress members Andy Ogles, who leads the bill, and Diana Harshbarger, the proposed legislation is titled the “Make Greenland Great Again Act.” An earlier version of the draft was reported by Fox News Digital, which indicated that by Monday morning, the bill had 10 co-sponsors.
Trump has expressed his desire to make Greenland part of the United States, not ruling out the use of military or economic leverage to persuade Denmark to cede control. This comes at a time when Republicans have secured a slim majority in both the House and Senate following the U.S. elections on November 5th.
If passed,
This bill would allow the President to enter negotiations with Denmark starting on January 20, 2025, the day Trump assumes office. The text of the bill states, “Congress hereby authorizes the President, beginning at 12:01 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 20, 2025, to seek to enter into negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark to secure the acquisition of Greenland by the
United States.”
It further specifies, “Not later than 5 calendar days after reaching an agreement with the Kingdom
of Denmark relating to the acquisition of Greenland by the United States, the President shall
transmit to the appropriate congressional committees the agreement, including all related
materials and annexes.”
Greenland has been under Danish control for centuries, initially as a colony and now as an
autonomous region within the Danish realm. Any change in its legal status would require a
constitutional amendment in Denmark.
Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede, who has intensified efforts for Greenland’s independence,
has repeatedly stated that the island is not for sale, emphasizing that its future should be
determined by its people.
