German Foreign Minister Responds to Controversy Over Photograph
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has responded to the uproar sparked by a photograph showing her and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in what appeared to be a tense moment. Baerbock dismissed the controversy as baseless.
The photograph, published by German media last Thursday, depicted Scholz seemingly reaching out to Baerbock, while she appears to turn her back to him. German media outlets interpreted this interaction as Baerbock snubbing Scholz, possibly in response to his decision to withhold an additional €3 billion (approximately $3.09 billion) in emergency aid for Ukraine, ahead of the German parliamentary elections on February 23.

In a televised statement addressing the controversy, Baerbock clarified, “In that moment, clearly captured in the photograph, I had no idea what was happening behind me because, like anyone else, I don’t have eyes at the back of my head. It was just a normal picture, and no one can know how the situation evolved after that.”
Baerbock further noted that some journalists mistakenly believed this was her first meeting with
Scholz that day. On the same Thursday, German media reported that Scholz was blocking the plan
to provide an additional €3 billion in aid to Ukraine, which was advocated by both Baerbock and
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
This incident has highlighted the complexities and sometimes contentious nature of political
relationships and media interpretation within German politics, especially concerning
international aid and policy decisions. Baerbock’s response not only aims to quell the controversy
but also underscores the need for accurate media portrayal of political interactions.
