Formation of New Lebanese Government Expected This Weekend
The formation of Lebanon’s new government is expected to take place by the end of this week, according to a statement from Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati. In televised remarks, Mikati expressed optimism about the process, stating, “I do not anticipate any obstacles regarding the ministerial statement,” and emphasized the need for honesty and reconciliation among Lebanese political figures. He highlighted significant developments in Lebanese politics since the beginning of the year, aiming to share his vision candidly with the public.
Last week, the Lebanese presidency announced that Nawaf Salam had been tasked with forming the government after receiving the most support among parliament members, garnering 84 votes compared to Mikati’s 9. However, 35 MPs did not endorse anyone for the position. According to the Lebanese National News Agency, neither the “Loyalty to the Resistance” bloc, which includes Hezbollah MPs, nor the “Development and Liberation” bloc of Amal Movement MPs, named a candidate for the premiership.
Lebanese MP Sharbel Massaad noted in an interview on Sputnik radio that the revolution that
erupted on October 17 of the previous year supported change, aiding General Joseph Aoun’s
ascent to the presidency. Massaad described President Aoun as being outside traditional political
alignments, suggesting that his inaugural speech offered hope for all Lebanese. He stressed that
implementing this vision requires a government aligned with the President to meet the desired
objectives.
Massaad also highlighted Lebanon’s support for national stances in international forums, noting
that Judge Nawaf Salam’s commendable positions against Israel were a significant factor in his
selection for this role.
