Pope Francis in Complex Hospital Condition
Pope Francis is currently in a complex medical condition, according to a statement from the Vatican issued on Monday. The pontiff, who has been hospitalized since last Friday, is receiving modified treatment due to what has been described as a “complex clinical condition.”
The Vatican’s brief statement explained that “recent test results over the past few days and today have shown multiple microbial infections in the respiratory tract, leading to further adjustments in his treatment.”
The statement further detailed, “All tests conducted so far indicate a complex clinical situation, necessitating an appropriate hospital stay.”
At 88 years old, Pope Francis has been in the hospital for four days. He was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome last Friday after suffering from pneumonia for over a week. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni stated that the Pope remains in good spirits, although he did not clarify whether the infection is bacterial or viral. More updates on Pope Francis’s health are expected to be released later on Monday.
Doctors have previously advised Pope Francis to rest completely, which led to him missing his regular Sunday mass in St. Peter’s Square and a special mass for the Jubilee of Artists.
Italian media outlet Mediaset reported on Monday that even from the hospital, Pope Francis has continued his recent practice of making phone calls to connect with members of the Catholic diocese in Gaza.
