Liverpool Captain Comments on Fans’ Celebrations and Calls for Calm
Dutch star Virgil van Dijk, captain of Liverpool, has cautioned his teammates against any slip-ups, dismissing suggestions that the team has already secured the English Premier League title.
Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United, combined with Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest, has widened the gap at the top of the table to 13 points. This result brings the Reds tantalizingly close to reclaiming the Premier League crown, a title they last won five years ago.
Speaking about the fans’ premature celebrations, Van Dijk said, “They can sing whatever they want. Of course, we enjoy the atmosphere, and we have to deal with it.” He emphasized the need for focus, adding, “Nothing is decided yet. There are still 10 games left until the end, and nothing is set in stone. Until it’s official, we shouldn’t get distracted by anything else.”
Quoted by the British news agency PA Media, Van Dijk quipped, “I’d get bored, guys, in that case, because I’d be calling on you all to stay calm.” He elaborated, “You should enjoy winning matches, but not for too long since you’re playing almost every three days.”
The Liverpool captain stressed the importance of maintaining perspective: “We’ve put ourselves in a very good position, but that doesn’t mean anything is settled. I keep reminding the players—and the outside world, including you folks in the media—that there’s no room for arrogance or complacency.”
