The levies on some products will go up to 100% by month’s end, according to the trade representative’s office
The United States has made it official that there has been an increase in tariffs for a number of Chinese imports, said US Trade Representative Katherine Tai on Friday. Such products as electric vehicles and semiconductors are some of the products that will be affected by this new tariff rate.
The White House had first proposed the tariff increases in May, and the final rule was issued after taking public comments. As detailed in the final rocument last dated September 12, measures such as a 100% tariff on electric vehicles, placing a 50% tariff on solar cells and 25% for vehicle rechargeable batteries, steel, aluminium, masks and others effective September 27 will be implemented. Another change is the implementation of a 50% tariff on semiconductors by next year, while other tariffs on non- electrical vehicle batteries, medical gloves and other items will gradually go up over two years.
Speaking in a press release, Tai pointed out that the recent changes are part of a generalized effort to stem the influence of the government of the People’s Republic of China on American workers and businesses through compounding policies. She underscored that the end objective is to shield American businesses from illicit competition.
Since 2018, the officials of the US government have begun to perceive China as a principal economic competitor, with the expansiveness that first was begun by former President Donald Trump.
