G20 nations have agreed to work together to make the super-rich pay their taxes, but stopped short of a more substantial deal, according to a declaration adopted Friday after a meeting of finance ministers in Rio de Janeiro.

The United States sees no need to negotiate an international agreement on taxing the super-wealthy, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Thursday, highlighting divisions on a plan that is top of the agenda at a G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

Those countries — ranging from China, the world’s second-largest economy, to default-prone Argentina — have become so embedded in the global economy, particularly via trade and commodity value chains, that they are “no longer simply on the receiving end of global shocks”

Discussions on climate change and possible solutions continue to be geared towards what the Brazilian presidency of the G20 is proposing. The analysis was made by Ambassador André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, Secretary of Climate, Energy and Environment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after the second meeting of the group held at the G20 headquarters in Brasilia.
