Egypt at the G20 Summit for the Fourth Time: A Commitment to Global Cooperation
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the G20 Summit scheduled for November 18-19, 2024.
Ambassador Ahmed Fahmy, the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, announced that President El-Sisi is attending the summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This marks Egypt’s fourth overall participation in the G20 Summits.
Egypt previously participated in the G20 Summit in 2016 during China’s presidency, in 2019 during Japan’s presidency, and in 2023 during India’s presidency, which reflects the growing international recognition of Egypt’s global weight and its central role in the regional arena.
The spokesperson stated
that the summit will address several priority issues for developing countries, including “social inclusion and combating poverty and hunger,” “global governance institution reforms,” and “energy transition within the framework of sustainable development.”
It is expected that the Egyptian President will deliver speeches at the summit sessions focusing
on Egypt’s development efforts, the challenges developing countries face in achieving sustainable
development goals, especially amidst ongoing international political and economic fluctuations,
and Egypt’s vision regarding the priority of solidarity and enhancing cooperation to tackle these challenges.
The G20 was established in 1999 following an initiative by the G7 Summit to unite major
industrialized nations with emerging economies to foster constructive dialogue among these
countries. The group’s creation was in response to the financial crises of the 1990s.
The G20 represents 90% of the world’s GDP, 80% of global trade volume, and two-thirds of the
world’s population, encompassing economies like Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Australia, Brazil,
Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
