The National Salvation Government (NSG) of Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, is starting the process of maintaining FSO Safer tank of oil with cooperation of United Nations. To knowing that FSO Safer is a floating oil tank and offloading vessel that is moored in the Red Sea north of Al Hudaydah City, in Yemen.
Along five years ago, there were many discussions about maintaining and repairing FSO Safer tank between UN and NSG, because FSO Safer was existing as an oiled bomb that threatening marine environment in the Red Sea. And UNEP reports said that if FSO Safer is not repaired, it will damage the marine life along the Red Sea and Arab Sea as well.
Today Wednesday, 7 June, 2023, an airplane coming from Djibouti has arrived to Al-Hudaydah Airport as part of the logistical preparations to salvage the Floating Oil Reservoir FSO Safer. This comes with coordination of the Committee director of the Safer Ship File.
According to the directions of the President of the Supreme Political Council, His Excellency Marshal Mehdi Al-Mashat, all vessels working with the United Nations team to implement the project of saving the floating tank Safar and installing the alternative floating tank are exempted from fees.
During his meeting with the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, David Grassley, yesterday, Transport Minister Abdulwahab Al-Durra mentioned that the National Salvation Government is making a contribution by exempting the UN from fiscal fees. In accordance with Supreme Political Council directions, we provide the UN team with all the facilities and technical support in order to carry out the strategy to save the floating reservoir, to set up a new storage tank, and collaborate to save the marine environment that belong all states bordering the Red Sea.
David Grissley, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, thanks the Supreme Political Council for their high-level of cooperation and coordination in granting permits and exemptions from all legal fees to repair FSO Safer tank and the provided facilities.
UN Coordinator, David Grissley, emphasized the significance of expanding schedules of flights through Sana’a airport for humanitarian reasons and to alleviate Yemeni suffering. He confirmed the seek for international assistance of rehabilitation for Al-Hudaydah Airport.
