Lebanese Government Decides to Deport Abdel Rahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi to the UAE
The Lebanese government announced on Tuesday that it has decided to deport Abdel Rahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, the son of the late Muslim Brotherhood leader, to the United Arab Emirates.
Lebanese caretaker government’s Information Minister, Ziad Makary, stated during the reading of the Cabinet’s decisions: “The Cabinet has decided to deport the detainee Abdel Rahman Al-Qaradawi to the Emirates.” Lebanese authorities recently detained Al-Qaradawi while he was
returning from a brief visit to Syria, based on an Interpol notice issued by the Arab Interior
Ministers Council.
The Attorney General in Lebanon, Judge Jamal Al-Hajjar, clarified that Al-Qaradawi is detained in
Lebanon under an Interpol Red Notice issued by the Arab Interior Ministers Council, citing an in
absentia conviction by Egyptian courts for crimes including spreading false news, incitement to
violence, and terrorism.
Both Egypt and the UAE have demanded Al-Qaradawi’s extradition; Egypt because he is wanted
under a judicial sentence, while the UAE seeks to prosecute him on its soil after he criticized them
in a video recorded in Syria, which they consider a crime related to disturbing public peace and
inciting violence and terrorism.
A video of Abdel Rahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi
Filmed at the Umayyad Mosque square in Damascus sparked outrage in Egypt after he criticized
Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. In the video shared on social media, Al-Qaradawi claimed that
the new Syrian administration faces “malicious” challenges and conspiracies plotted by several
countries, notably the three mentioned.
Egypt has formally requested Lebanon to extradite Al-Qaradawi, who has been detained in
Lebanon for several days, based on a pre-existing judicial cooperation agreement between the
two countries.
Additionally, the Lebanese embassy in Abu Dhabi officially received a request from the UAE for
the extradition of Abdel Rahman Al-Qaradawi, according to Lebanese media reports.
