The International Red Cross Unveils Upcoming Plans for Syria
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has revealed its determination to expand its operations in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime, due to acute shortages and urgent needs across various service sectors.
Mirjana Spoljaric, the President of the ICRC, confirmed that the organization aims to significantly increase its humanitarian support in Syria, with an emphasis on health, water, and energy sectors as top priorities.
Spoljaric added that the funding allocated for Red Cross projects was initially around $100 million, but the organization has decided to substantially increase this amount, according to Reuters on Monday evening, January 6.
She noted that all donor countries have stepped up funding for its projects in Syria, especially in the health sector, which is in a catastrophic state and in dire need of significant efforts and funding.
On another note, Spoljaric confirmed that preliminary assessments for immediate rehabilitation of the electrical system in northeastern Syria have been partially completed.
Spoljaric’s statements come after her three-day field visit to Syria, where she met with Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad al-Bashir, the President of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, Hazem Baqlah, and members of the Association of Sednaya Prison Detainees and Missing, as reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
It’s worth mentioning that the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies launched an emergency appeal on December 23, 2024, seeking to provide the Syrian Arab Red Crescent with $144 million in aid.
