EU Warns of “Decisive” Response if Trump Imposes Tariffs
The European Union (EU) has issued a stern warning that its response will be “decisive” should U.S. President Donald Trump impose tariffs on the bloc. Brussels has criticized Washington for levying tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China.
Currently, Brussels hopes to avoid a trade dispute with Trump through negotiation. However, Trump declared on Friday that he would “definitely” impose tariffs on the EU in the future, following his actions against China, Mexico, and Canada.
A spokesperson for the European Commission stated, “The European Union regrets the decision by the United States to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.” The Commission warned that “tariffs cause unnecessary economic disruption and increase inflation. They are harmful to all parties involved.”
The spokesperson further noted, “The EU will respond decisively to any trading partner that imposes unfair and arbitrary tariffs on its goods.” He also mentioned, “At this time, we are not aware of any additional tariffs imposed on EU products.”
The EU remains committed to low tariffs “to promote economic growth and stability within a strong, rule-based trading system,” the spokesperson added. He reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to its trade and investment relationship with the U.S., describing it as “the largest in the world.”
He stressed that “much is at stake,” emphasizing that “both sides must strive to enhance this relationship.”
Trump has openly expressed his hostility towards the EU, accusing the bloc of treating the U.S. “very unfairly” in trade. Tensions have escalated due to his repeated insistence on seeking to purchase Greenland from Denmark, an EU member.
