US Suspends Tariffs on Imports from Mexico and Canada
The United States has decided to suspend the imposition of tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada after both countries reached new agreements concerning border security, as announced by leaders on Monday.
Originally, the proposed U.S. tariffs, which were set to impose a 25% duty on imports from Mexico and Canada and only a 10% duty on Canadian energy exports, were due to come into effect on Tuesday. However, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Washington agreed to suspend tariffs on Canadian imports “for at least 30 days” following a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trudeau shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), “The proposed tariffs will be
suspended for at least 30 days while we work together.”
In response,
Canada agreed to make concessions regarding border security. Trudeau added, “Canada is
implementing our $3.1 billion border plan. Enhancing borders with new helicopters, advanced
technology, and deploying additional personnel, along with better coordination with our American
partners and increased resources to stop the flow of Fentanyl.”
He noted that “nearly 10,000 frontline workers are working and will continue to work to protect our
borders.”
President Trump confirmed the tariff suspension in a post on Truth Social, stating, “As President, it’s
my responsibility to ensure the safety of all Americans, and I am doing that. I am very happy with this
preliminary outcome, and the announced tariffs from Saturday will be suspended for 30 days to see if
we can reach a final economic agreement with Canada.”
Earlier, the U.S. also deferred tariffs on Mexican imports for one month after Mexico agreed to deploy
10,000 soldiers to its northern border. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Trump announced
this agreement via social media posts following their discussion.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that Sheinbaum agreed to “immediately deploy 10,000 Mexican troops” at
the border with the U.S. Sheinbaum confirmed the tariff suspension on X, while Trump added that
“these soldiers will be specifically tasked with stopping the flow of Fentanyl and illegal immigrants into
our country.”
During this one-month suspension period, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary
Scott Besent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and high-level representatives from Mexico will
hold meetings to attempt to resolve outstanding issues.
Trump commented, “I look forward to participating in these negotiations with President Sheinbaum as
we try to reach an agreement between our nations.”
