Israeli writer Ya’oz Seber believes that the attack launched by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and the ensuing events over the past year have exposed the Israeli government’s inability to protect its citizens and its failure to devise a plan to end the war and return to stability.
In an article published by the Israeli newspaper “Zman,” the writer argues that the Al-Aqsa Flood operation has left Israel in a state of chaos, fear, and frustration, with increasing internal tensions and worsening economic and social conditions. This raises many questions about the country’s future.
Israel Has Lost the War
According to Seber, Israel has been losing daily for over a year, with more than 1,500 citizens killed and continued attacks from thousands of rockets and drones originating from Gaza, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran.
Despite the technological and strategic advances Israel made in the early 2000s, which offer some protection, Israeli ground forces are exhausted and see no hope for a positive outcome anytime soon, according to the writer.
Seber highlights that Israel is deteriorating in every aspect: security, society, economy, and politics, with no government official stepping forward to halt this downward spiral.
He adds that the north is burning, depopulated, and Gaza’s surrounding areas are in disarray, with hundreds of thousands of settlers left homeless and uncertain about their future.
No Exit Plan
Seber attributes these ongoing losses to the absence of an official, independent investigation committee led by the Chief Justice to examine the catastrophic events and recommend preventive measures for the future. He emphasizes that continuing the war, destroying infrastructure, and targeting Palestinian militant leaders like Yahya Sinwar will not change the fact that Israel has already lost the war.
In light of this situation, the writer questions Israel’s future, where its people are being killed, its army is drained, and its skilled workforce is fleeing in search of safety. He notes that instead of progress and prosperity, the country has sunk into an endless war on multiple fronts, with no realistic plan for resolution.
Ending the War Is the Solution
The writer concludes that there is no victory to be achieved in the current war, and no patriotic speeches from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu can erase the damage caused by the events of October 7 and the daily losses Israel suffers.
Seber ends his article by stating that Israel will not recover until its people decide to put an end to the ongoing rounds of war and focus on the future, which can only be done by changing the government and crafting a forward-looking vision that includes stopping the war and starting a new phase.
