Polling areas opened Thursday in Kuwait’s first election since Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah assumed power late last year, as voters choose representatives from five electoral constituencies for the National Assembly’s 18th legislative term.
The polls, fourth since December 2020, and will close at midnight local time, according to state news agency KUNA.
Some 834,733 eligible voters would choose 50 Members of Parliaments, from 200 candidates, that would serve for a term of four years. Kuwait bans political parties and candidates run as independents.
There are 104,038 voters in the first constituency with 41 candidates competing, 95,302 voters in the second constituency with 39 candidates, 143,693 voters with 32 hopefuls in the third constituency, 220,932 voters and 48 candidates in the fourth constituency and 270,768 eligible voters and 40 candidates in the fifth constituency.
Some 123 designated schools would host the ballot boxes with 764 main and subcommittees therein, KUNA reported.
