Russia Sends Diesel Shipment to Syria via Sanctioned Tanker, First in Over a Decade
Data from the London Stock Exchange Group reveals that Russia has dispatched a shipment of diesel fuel to Syria aboard the U.S.-sanctioned tanker Prosperity. This marks the first direct supply of its kind in over ten years. The Barbados-flagged tanker, managed by Dubai-based Fornax Ship Management—a company also under U.S. sanctions—loaded approximately 37,000 tons of low-sulfur diesel from Russia’s Primorsk port on February 8. The vessel is currently anchored near Syria’s Baniyas port.
This shipment arrives amid U.S. sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These measures aim to curtail Moscow’s oil and gas revenues, weakening its ability to fund military operations. The delivery highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing sanctions and tracking energy flows in the region.
