The UN and the Syrian government are leading joint efforts in order to resolve the Al-Hasakah water crisis, which is affecting tens of thousands of people.
Sources in Syria confirmed to Al Mayadeen Net that there are “joint efforts are being carried out by the Syrian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in cooperation with international organizations operating in the country, to resolve the drinking water problem in Al-Hasakah.”
The sources underscored that “meetings are being held with organizations in the province in this regard, all of which are aimed at putting pressure to end the suffering of hundreds of thousands of residents of the city of Al-Hasakah and its countryside.”
Moreover, Al Mayadeen Net’s correspondent revealed that there is “a new UN mediation to solve the problem of pumping water from the Alouk water station in Syria, and to deliver water to one million people in Al-Hasakah,” adding that “it is anticipated that within days, the mediation will lead to finding sustainable solutions to the water problem in Al-Hasakah, and ensure that the problem does not recur.”
It is worth noting that the Allouk water station has been occupied by Turkey since the so-called “Peace Spring Operation” in October of 2019. Also, the Alouk station is the only water source for the one million civilians in Al-Hasakah and its countryside.
