The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) held a meeting today chaired by President Mahmoud Abbas.
During the meeting, the committee reviewed the President’s initiative which he announced before the Grand Turkish National Assembly. The initiative included his decision to go to the Gaza Strip with members of the Palestinian leadership.
In his initiative, President Abbas called on the leaders of Arab and Islamic, the good people in the world and the Secretary-General of the United Nations to join him to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, calling on the UN Security Council to secure access to the Gaza Strip and then proceed to Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Palestinian state.
President Abbas stressed that this national initiative aims to stop the ongoing aggression against our people and achieve the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces from the Gaza Strip and all Palestinian territories.
He added that the initiative reaffirms that the State of Palestine and the Palestine Liberation Organization have jurisdiction over the entire territory of the State of Palestine, including the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Jerusalem, as one geographical political unit.
The President also emphasized the importance of strengthening Palestinian national unity under the umbrella of the Liberation Organization; the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
The Executive Committee of the PLO confirmed that it will continue to supervise the steps for political action at all regional and international levels, to mobilize Arab, international and Islamic powers in order to implement the President’s initiative and what was stated in his speech.
The committee stressed the need for the speedy formation of a committee of all Palestinian forces and factions that would work to make the President’s initiative a success, and to reach a unified plan to achieve complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and allow the national consensus government to assume its full responsibilities, as well as to coordinate with international donor bodies and organizations to prepare an action plan for the return of the displaced and the reconstruction of the Strip.
The committee confirmed that it will follow up on the practical steps to obtain Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.
