Former Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, following reports that Netanyahu plans to replace Defense Minister Yoav Gallant with Gideon Sa’ar, a close ally.
Speaking to Israel Hayom, Gantz said, “Replacing the Defense Minister on the eve of a major northern campaign, which could escalate into a regional war, is a severe security oversight.”
The leader of the “State Camp” party further accused Netanyahu of putting Israel’s security at risk during a critical time. “Instead of focusing on defeating Hamas, retrieving hostages, handling Hezbollah, and ensuring the safe return of northern residents, Netanyahu is preoccupied with political rallies and reshuffling the defense ministry. This reflects poor leadership and distorted priorities,” Gantz stated.
Tensions Rise Amid Possible Defense Minister Switch
Channel 12 reported that an agreement between Netanyahu and Sa’ar to appoint the latter as Defense Minister, replacing Gallant, could be announced by Tuesday evening.
According to Yedioth Ahronoth, tensions between the military and the government reached an alarming level, with senior security officials warning the government against sparking a full-scale war.
The newspaper also revealed that the government is planning bold steps in Lebanon, potentially involving a ground operation. Meanwhile, Netanyahu has declared that one of the war’s objectives is to ensure the safe return of northern Israeli residents to their homes.
These developments highlight the growing divide between Israel’s political leadership and military officials, as concerns mount over potential escalation in the north, particularly with Hezbollah and Lebanon.
