The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Republic of Ghana have announced a $30 million partnership to support nature-based community development and climate solutions. The initial areas of investment will focus on biodiversity and reforestation efforts.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Amina Abdulla Al Dahhak, UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and Samuel Abu Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.
Key Areas of Investment
The Letter of Intent outlines six areas of investment, including biodiversity, reforestation, and agroecology. These initiatives aim to provide benefits in climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and community development, while also focusing on gender equality and youth empowerment.
The partnership will support Ghana’s “Resilient Ghana Plan,” which includes monitoring and reporting indicators and builds on Ghana’s pioneering efforts under the REDD+ initiative to reduce deforestation emissions.
Commitment to Global Biodiversity and Climate Goals
Dr. Amina Al Dahhak emphasized, “Our partnership with Ghana underscores the UAE’s focus on global biodiversity and achieving climate and sustainable development goals. This initiative supports our commitment to halt deforestation by 2030 and protect biodiversity.”
The UAE’s investment in Ghana is expected to enhance reforestation efforts, positively impact local communities, and create a broader impact by protecting forests and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
Samuel Abu Jinapor also highlighted the importance of resources in tackling deforestation. He expressed appreciation for the UAE’s support and pledged to utilize the resources effectively to achieve the best outcomes in forest and climate protection, aiming to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Global Commitments and Future Plans
Both countries are members of the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership, coordinating public and private investments for forest and climate protection. They will discuss initial joint projects at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November, followed by further collaboration at COP30 next year.
The partnership also aligns with the global biodiversity framework set by the Kunming-Montreal agreement, contributing to the UAE’s pledge to mobilize over $2 billion for nature and climate-related projects.
