Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said on Monday that communication with Hezbollah remains ongoing, and the party is not far from his stance regarding ways to achieve a ceasefire in Lebanon.
In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Berri stated, “Lebanon is still committed to the path agreed upon with U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein, which aims to secure a ceasefire with Israel and implement UN Resolution 1701.”
He added, “The initiative I previously proposed regarding the ceasefire was agreed upon with Hassan Nasrallah, and this agreement remains in place.”
Berri’s Initiative
Berri has put forward a proposal that seeks to reduce tensions between Lebanon and Israel, according to sources cited by Sky News Arabia. His initiative combines elements from the American proposals submitted by U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein and the French suggestions from earlier negotiations.
The plan reportedly includes an initial four-week truce, during which military actions on both sides would cease. This would pave the way for a full ceasefire and include guarantees for reconstruction and the return of displaced persons.
The initiative also proposes a path toward demarcating Lebanon’s land borders, bolstering the Lebanese Army’s capacity to monitor the borders, and halting any military activity by Hezbollah. Sources suggest that the core of the initiative is to create a consensus among most parties to implement Resolution 1701.
