Lebanon has officially lodged a complaint with the United Nations Security Council, demanding international condemnation of ongoing Israeli aggression and strict enforcement of Resolution 1701, which calls for Israel’s immediate withdrawal from all Lebanese territory.
Details of the Complaint
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the submission of a new complaint regarding Israeli violations from October 3 to October 14. Lebanon condemned Israel for its continuous breaches of Lebanese sovereignty across land, sea, and air, targeting Lebanese military installations, emergency services, and civilians not engaged in hostilities through indiscriminate bombardment of cities and villages.
The complaint highlighted specific incidents, including attacks on the town of Aito, as well as the areas of Nuwairi and Ras al-Nabaa, resulting in hundreds of civilian casualties. It also condemned the Israeli strikes on water transport facilities, the Masnaa border crossing, and air raids near the Baalbek Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the historic market in Nabatiyeh.
Claims of Targeted Killings
Lebanon criticized Israel’s systematic approach to killings and targeted assassinations through surprise airstrikes in populated areas, showing little regard for civilian life. The Lebanese government asserted that Israel attempts to impose its security vision in the region through aggressive military means, undermining the sovereignty and security of neighboring countries. It accused Israel of using unfounded claims to justify its actions, particularly in relation to self-defense.
Call for Action
Lebanon urged the UN Security Council to condemn Israel’s wide-ranging and ongoing aggression against the Lebanese people and its ground invasion of Lebanese territory. The complaint reiterated Lebanon’s call for the Council to ensure that Israel fully complies with Resolution 1701 by immediately halting hostilities and withdrawing from all Lebanese land.
The Lebanese Foreign Ministry emphasized its reliance on the critical role of UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), which is mandated to collaborate closely with the Lebanese Army to reinforce state authority over all Lebanese territory within internationally recognized borders.
Context of the Complaint
This recent complaint forms part of the periodic submissions made by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Lebanon’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York. It aims to document Israeli aggression and pressure the international community and the Security Council to take action to halt these violations.
