Following a meeting with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Tuesday, U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein announced that a decision on a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is “close at hand.”
Constructive Talks in Beirut
Hochstein described his discussions with Berri as “highly constructive” and emphasized that there is a “real opportunity” to end the ongoing conflict.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, he stated:
“This is a moment of decision-making. I am here in Beirut to facilitate reaching this decision, but ultimately, it is up to the parties involved to bring an end to the conflict. The solution is within reach.”
Hochstein stressed that both Lebanon and Israel hold the responsibility for deciding on the ceasefire, adding, “We are awaiting a decision from both Hezbollah and Israel to move forward.”
Ceasefire Progress and Hope
Hochstein expressed optimism, noting, “The window is open now to reach the end of this conflict,” and voiced hope that the coming days would result in a final decision.
The U.S. envoy is also scheduled to meet with Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Lebanese Army Commander General Joseph Aoun later on Tuesday.
Positive Signals
Hochstein’s arrival in Lebanon comes amid reports that both Lebanon and Hezbollah have shown willingness to accept the U.S.-brokered ceasefire proposal.
According to Axios, Hezbollah’s initial response to the draft agreement was reportedly a “yes,” though negotiations are ongoing. Similarly, Israel’s Channel 13 reported that feedback from Lebanon regarding the U.S. proposal has been positive, but a final agreement has yet to be confirmed.
