Denmark: Trump’s Recognition of Greenland’s Self-Determination “Significant”
In a press conference held in Helsinki on Wednesday, March 05, 2025, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen described U.S. President Donald Trump’s acknowledgment of Greenland’s right to self-determination as a “significant” development. Trump, who has repeatedly expressed interest in annexing Greenland as part of the United States, reiterated this stance during a speech to Congress on Tuesday. In his address, he painted a picture of prosperity and security for the “remarkable” people of the island.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has long been a point of interest in Arctic geopolitics. Rasmussen highlighted Trump’s remarks, noting, “He said they respect Greenland’s right to self-determination, and I think that was the most important part of the speech.”
The Danish minister emphasized the shared interest between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States in ensuring the security of the Arctic region. “We are ready to work with our American friends to achieve this,” Rasmussen said. “But, of course, it will be on the basis that we are the Kingdom of Denmark.”
Meanwhile, Denmark’s Defense Minister dismissed Trump’s annexation plans, stating flatly that they “will not happen.”
