Gulf Cooperation Council Strengthens Ties with Syria: A New Phase of Collaboration
Jassem Al-Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), emphasized that the first joint meeting between the GCC and Syria, held in Mecca, represents a practical step toward aligning visions and enhancing collaboration. This historic gathering inaugurates a new phase in GCC-Syria relations, reinforcing Syria’s status as a brotherly nation and an integral part of the Arab world with its rich history.
Al-Budaiwi highlighted the GCC’s unwavering commitment to standing by the Syrian people, driven by a firm belief that a strong, secure, and stable Syria benefits not only Syrians but also the Gulf, the broader Arab region, and the international community.
A Steadfast Gulf Stance
The Secretary-General reiterated the GCC’s consistent position of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity while rejecting foreign interference in its internal affairs, terrorism, and extremism. He underscored that Syria’s security and stability are foundational pillars for regional security.
The GCC remains determined to take necessary steps to coordinate its member states’ efforts in providing aid to Syria. Al-Budaiwi called on the six GCC partners, along with other nations and organizations, to offer comprehensive support to the Syrian people, lift imposed sanctions, and enable Syria’s economic recovery to meet its humanitarian and developmental needs.

Comprehensive Gulf Support for Syria
In the same context, Al-Budaiwi clarified that GCC support for Syria extends beyond relief and humanitarian aid. The Council actively backs international efforts to achieve peace and security in Syria. He pointed to the GCC’s keen participation, alongside its General Secretariat, in the high-level ministerial conference on Syria hosted by France on February 13 as a critical step toward supporting a comprehensive transitional process and addressing the needs for restoring stability.
A New Era of Partnership
Al-Budaiwi described the Mecca meeting as the beginning of a new phase of joint action, aimed at restoring Syria’s rightful standing. He expressed optimism about building a strategic partnership and dialogue with Syria, modeled after the GCC’s strategic dialogues with other Arab nations. This partnership is envisioned as a roadmap and beacon for advancing Gulf-Syrian relations across all levels.
