High-Level Iranian Military Delegation in Damascus for Strategic Meetings with Syrian Leaders
In a development signaling a strengthening of bilateral ties and military cooperation between Iran and Syria, a high-level Iranian military delegation has arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The visit aims to hold discussions with senior Syrian political and military figures at a time when the region is witnessing significant geopolitical shifts, making defense collaboration between the two nations crucial.
Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, Iran’s Defense Minister, leading a delegation comprising prominent military officers and Defense Ministry officials, touched down in Damascus to discuss several key issues:
- Military and Security Cooperation: Perspectives on developing joint defense capabilities, sharing intelligence, and counter-terrorism strategies.
- Regional Challenges: Analyzing current regional dynamics, including Israeli threats and the implications of the Syrian crisis on the national security of both countries.
- Support for Syria: Exploring ways Iran can support reconstruction efforts in Syria, alongside providing economic and technical assistance.
Following his arrival at Damascus International Airport, Nasirzadeh stated, “We have come to Damascus at the invitation of the Syrian Defense Minister, and we will have meetings with political and military officials to discuss various mutual issues between our countries, especially in the fields of defense and security, aiming to expand cooperation and exchange expertise.”
He further added:
“Syria has a rich history and deep experience in combating terrorism and is a key supporter in
the Axis of Resistance. Based on the recommendations of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, we
are ready to provide all means of support to our friendly state.”
This visit comes in the wake of Israeli strikes against targets in Syria. Previously, Ali Asghar Haji-
Kabir, an advisor to Iran’s Foreign Minister, mentioned that “his country has not made any
decisions to change the number of its forces in Syria in light of tensions in the Middle East.”
The visit underscores Iran’s commitment to supporting Syria against the challenges it faces and
is part of a broader strategy to counter shared threats, including Israeli activities in southern
Syria and Western alliances’ movements in the region.
