Trump Administration Reverses Biden’s Suspension on Heavy Bomb Supply to Israel
On Saturday, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump decided to cancel a previous directive from the Biden administration that had suspended the supply of a particular type of heavy bomb to Israel.
According to Axios, quoting three Israeli officials, the White House issued instructions to the U.S. Department of Defense, the Pentagon, to lift the suspension that had been placed on supplying Israel with 2,000-pound bombs. Reuters also reported, citing a source, that the U.S. has lifted the suspension on the supply of these 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, a move that was widely anticipated.
The United States had previously paused the shipment of these heavy bombs in May last year due to concerns about the potential impact in Gaza during the war.
A study published in October last year in the “PLOS Global Public Health” journal revealed that
the Israeli military had dropped 2,000-pound bombs in areas very close to all hospitals in Gaza
during the first weeks of the conflict with the region. This study was based on an analysis of bomb
crater impacts conducted by several universities, including Harvard University. It found that
between October 7 and November 17, 2023, Israel dropped 2,000-pound bombs within the lethal
geographic range of 25% of all hospitals in Gaza. The analysis also detected craters within the
range that could cause damage or injury to infrastructure in over 83% of hospitals.
