Israel and EU Discuss Gaza’s Future in Brussels Meeting
On Monday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar will meet senior European officials in Brussels, marking a revival of dialogue with the European Union (EU). This comes as the EU considers its role in rebuilding Gaza following last month’s ceasefire agreement.
First Partnership Council Since 2022
Saar will lead Israel’s delegation at the EU-Israel Partnership Council meeting alongside the EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas. This is the first such meeting since 2022, signaling a renewed effort to strengthen ties. Discussions will center on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Israeli-Palestinian relations, and broader Middle East developments.
Israel’s ambassador to the EU, Haim Regev, told Reuters, “Monday’s Partnership Council is a vital opportunity to reaffirm and enhance the partnership between Israel and the EU.” This sentiment underscores the importance of the talks, which could shape future cooperation.
Divisions Within the EU on Gaza
The Gaza war has exposed deep divisions within the EU. While member states condemned Hamas’ attacks, some staunchly supported Israel’s military response, while others criticized the campaign for its devastating civilian toll.
In February 2024, the leaders of Spain and Ireland sent a letter to the European Commission, urging a review of Israel’s compliance with human rights obligations under the 2000 EU-Israel Partnership Agreement. This agreement forms the backbone of political and economic cooperation between the two sides.
A Middle Ground Approach
Ahead of Monday’s meeting, the EU’s 27 member states debated a balanced stance. According to a draft document seen by Reuters, the EU will reaffirm its commitment to Israel’s security while emphasizing “the need to ensure the safe and dignified return of displaced Gaza residents to their homes.”
Looking Ahead
As the EU explores its role in Gaza’s reconstruction, the Brussels meeting could set the stage for future initiatives.
