A large submarine volcano is likely erupting deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. However, scientists don’t know for sure because the Ahyi Seamount is so inaccessible. Located in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey said Monday that all indications point to the volcano beginning to erupt in mid-October when hydroacoustic sensors at Wake Island began to record signals consistent with such activity. In collaboration with researchers in Tahiti, combined analysis of the signals with data from seismic stations in Guam and Japan suggests that the source of the activity is at or near Ahyi Seamount.  Satellite…

The asteroid that ended the reign of the dinosaurs sixty-six million years ago also created a “mega-tsunami” whose waves grew more than a mile high, according to a new study. Scientists recreated the impact of the Chicxulub, a nine-mile-wide asteroid that not only wiped out the dinosaurs but destroyed most of Earth’s species and plants. The study, which was published in AGU Advances, outlined the effects of the global tsunami and flooding. Researchers hope their work can be used to unlock insight surrounding the geology of the Cretaceous period. “This tsunami was strong enough to disturb and erode sediments in…

A federal judge faced blowback on Twitter Thursday after he struck down a Florida law that was aimed to stop wokeness on college campuses. Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker of the Northern District of Florida blasted the “Individual Freedom Act,” originally called the “Stop WOKE” Act, calling it “positively dystopian.” “The law officially bans professors from expressing disfavored viewpoints in university classrooms while permitting unfettered expression of the opposite viewpoints,” Walker wrote in a Thursday order. “Defendants argue that, under this Act, professors enjoy “academic freedom” so long as they express only those viewpoints of which the State approves.
