Lavrov explains that ‘rules’ were being enforced by the US and its allies to justify measures against countries abiding by international law and refusing to yield to the ‘vested interests’ of the ‘golden billion’.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s visit to the UN Headquarters in New York was filled with surprise statements and call-outs.
During his statement at the UN Security Council meeting on effective multilateralism and defending the principles of the organization’s Charter, Lavrov called out Western countries for taking it upon themselves to speak on behalf of the world.
“Let us call things by their proper names: no one has allowed the Western minority to speak on behalf of all of humanity. You need to behave decently and respect all members of the international community,” Lavrov warned.
He added that ‘rules’ were being enforced by the US and its allies to justify measures against countries abiding by international law and refusing to yield to the ‘vested interests’ of the ‘golden billion’.
“The theme of ‘democracies’ uniting against ‘autocracies’ has been introduced as an ideological justification for undermining multilateralism. In addition to ‘summits for democracy’, whose membership is determined by a self-proclaimed hegemon, other ‘clubs of the chosen few’ are being established, bypassing the UN,” Lavrov explained.
According to the diplomat, the West is ‘uncomfortable’ in entering negotiations within the UN format, as he criticized the decision-making technique of Western states, since they huddle in a ‘small circle’ to enter an agreement then notify the international community about it later.
‘Good for New York’
As part of his statement, Lavrov suggested it would be “good” if the organization relocated its headquarters from New York to elsewhere.
When asked about his opinion regarding the relocation, Lavrov told reporters, “I think that would be good for New York.”
This comes amid Russia’s condemnation on Sunday for the US decision not to issue visas to the Foreign Ministry’s convoy of Russian reporters to the UN Security Council, which Lavrov said violates the US pledge to protect freedom of speech.
Lavrov proclaimed that the US carried out multiple attempts to prove to the world that it remains the leading power of the global world order by “punishing those unsubmissive” and has used the International Monetary Fund as a tool to do so.
