UNIFIL statement on attacks on the Lebanese Army
UNIFIL is seriously concerned by numerous strikes on the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) inside the Lebanese territories, despite their declared non-involvement in the ongoing hostilities between Hizbullah and Israel.
The LAF has reported a series of Israeli strikes in recent weeks, resulting in the loss of personnel, damage to premises, and destruction of assets. Such attacks have claimed the lives of 45 LAF soldiers, according to the LAF.
On behalf of the entire UNIFIL family, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro has expressed deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for the swift and full recovery to the injured.
Such attacks targeting the LAF in Lebanese territory constitute a flagrant violation of UNSCR
1701 and international humanitarian law, which limits the use of violence against those not
participating in hostilities.
LAF’s role remains vital for the full implementation of Resolution 1701 (2006), which is essential
to ending the ongoing violence between Hizbullah and Israel.
We remain deeply alarmed by the escalation of hostilities and the widespread destruction and
loss of life across the Blue Line.
We urge all parties involved in the conflict to address their differences through negotiations – not through violence.
