Borrell: We Must Press Israel to End the War in the Middle East
Josep Borrell, the EU’s Foreign Policy Chief, stated that the cost of the absence of peace in the Middle East is exorbitant and intolerable, calling for pressure on Israel to stop the war in the region.
Borrell emphasized that the conflict in the Middle East has international implications, and the international community cannot remain passive. He noted that the number of casualties in
Lebanon is very high, with airstrikes killing over 3,500 people.
He added that Lebanon is on the brink of collapse, with dozens of villages in the south completely
destroyed. He pointed out that Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon target medical teams and hospitals.
“We need an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon… We want to restore sovereignty to Lebanon by land, sea, and air,” he said.
Borrell stressed that UNIFIL plays a crucial role in an environment where challenges are increasing, and attacks on it are never acceptable. He continued by saying that the EU reaffirms “its support for UNRWA, which plays an indispensable role in Gaza and Lebanon.”
He also announced the EU’s readiness to allocate 100 million euros to support the Lebanese Army, while simultaneously urging Lebanon’s leaders to fulfill their political responsibilities by electing a president and ending a two-year power vacuum.
“We must exert pressure on the Israeli government to stop the war and the bombing… We must press both Israel and Hezbollah to accept the American proposal for a ceasefire,” he declared.
Commenting on the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Borrell said,
“Decisions of the International Criminal Court are not political, and we strongly support them,”
accusing Israel of using starvation as a weapon.
He concluded by stating that there is “no alternative to an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon by all
parties and the implementation of Resolution 1701.”
